Waynesville was designated the county seat. n The first courthouse in Haywood County was built in 1814 in Waynesville. n The first post office was established in Canton in 1837. It was known as Pigeon River Post Office. James Moore was postmaster. n In 1852, Haywood County held its first legal execution. n In 1876, Dr. S.L. Love was elected as state auditor - the first Haywood County resident to hold state office. That same year, the Pigeon River (now Canton) saw the first train roll into town.
